Hunting Trophies’ smuggling from Sindh to USA



KARACHI: Pakistan Customs Intelligence and Investigation (I&I) has launched an inquiry against smuggling of hunting trophies from Pakistan’s Sindh province to the United States of America allegedly by two US nationals with the help of one – Pir Danish – who is son of PPP leader Pir Mazhar and owner of M/s Indus Safaris, it is learnt.

The Federal Investigation Authority (FIA) had referred the matter to Pakistan Customs in October 2021 however the further investigation started recently after lapse of fourteen months.

While confirming, Director of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Saqif Saeed said that an inquiry had been initiated and Pir Danish, the owner of Indus Safaris appeared before the Customs (I&I) and recorded his statement, submitted in his favor. An officer of assistant director rank has been deputed as inquiry officer and the matter will be dealt purely on merit, he adds.

According to details, following the complaint from US government on July 18, 2018, Samar Hussain Khan, Deputy Conservator of the Wildlife Department of the Ministry of Climate Change, Islamabad under the direction of the Federal government approached the Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to initiate the investigation of the matter of alleged illegal export of hunting trophies to US by two US citizens with the connivance of a Pakistani firm M/s Indus Safaris.

In his submission before the FIA, Samar Hussain said that the US Fish and Wildlife Service had detained some hunting trophies from the custody of two American Citizens Jason Keith Bruce and George Latham Myers, which were illegally exported to America by a Pakistani firm M/s Indus Safaris (Pvt) owned by an individual Pir Danish and both the US citizens presented fake documents of Pakistan Customs for clearance of the same trophies.

Deputy Conservator Mr. Khan concluded in his complaint that the said firm M/s Indus Safaris was registered with the Ministry of Climate Change in 2015 as a trophy hunting outfitter but its registration was not renewed afterwards, and due to this the said firm (M/s Indus Safari) had been blacklisted.

After the inquiry and by verifying the official record on September 23, 2021, Sub Inspector and Enquiry Officer Mehwish Iftikhar of CCC, FIA, Karachi submitted her report with his department (FIA), saying that in view of the facts, circumstances and initial inquiry of the matter prima facie transpired that with the connivance of M/s Indus Safaris, Jason Keith Bruce and George Latham Myers (both the American citizens) hunting trophies were illegally exported to the USA by producing fake documents of the Ministry of Climate Change and Animal Quarantine Department, Pakistan for clearance of trophies, this act of accused persons is a punishable offense under the Pakistan Trade Control of Wild Fauna and Flora Act 2012, Pakistan Trade Control of Wild Fauna & Flora Rules 2018 and Pakistan Penal Code 1860.

FIA inquiry further revealed that as per the official record of the Security Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) the said company M/s Indus Safaris was not registered in SECP as a private limited company, but the owner of the firm (M/s Indus safaris) claiming its firm as a private limited company at his official internet and at social media page.


DG Khadim Hussain refuses to grant mining leases to relatives of caretaker minister



KARACHI: Making it for the first time, Director General, Directorate General of Mines and Minerals, Government of Sindh, has refused to grant mining leases illegally to the relatives of Sindh’s caretaker minister Mir Khuda Marri, it is learnt.

The insiders told Sindhnews that the caretaker minister was allegedly pressuring the DG Khadim Hussain Channa to grant more than 11 mining leases to brothers and relatives of the minister.

However, Mr Channa clearly refused to obey his orders resultantly the caretaker minister had a clash of worth with the senior officer, sources disclosed.

Soon after the clash, caretaker minister Khuda Bux Marri refrained the officer from attending the office and roaming the influential circle to get the officer transferred, the sources said, adding that caretaker minister had also requested the caretaker chief minister Sindh to transfer the officer.

So far, more than 20 mining leases have been granted to the close relatives of Mir Khuda Bux Marri however not a single lease granted to anyone after the decision of the Sindh High Court.

CLICK Mafia – World Bank’s $23 million becomes useless  



KARACHI: As the officers of the Sindh Government are used to of minting money, the assistance/loan of around US $ 23 million has also been fallen victim of corruption as the schemes initiated under Competitive and Livable City of Karachi (CLICK) project have been declared ‘substandard’.

The CLICK project is proposed to be financed by the World Bank’s loan under Investment Project Financing (IPF) and the Sindh government.

As per details, the monitoring team of the Planning & Development Department unearthed over Rs 32 billion embezzlement in the development schemes under the World Bank’s CLICK project in Karachi.

The team monitored 157 schemes in the first phase and 100 schemes were declared substandard whereas the report also revealed the use of old paver in the road construction. Moreover, the planning and development department has informed the World Bank about the substandard work in Sindh’s CLICK project.

It is pertinent to mention here that last year massive corruption and irregularities were unearthed in the sale of expensive KMC in Karachi’s Baldia West in which 4-acre land was sold via ‘fake challan’.The irregularities were unearthed in the sale of KMC land in Orangi’s Gulshan-e-Zia.

The four-acre land of a workshop and nursery was sold via fake challan with the nexus of a project director. Sources said that the land was used to bury the offal and waste of animals from 2004 to 2016.

The land came under the administration of KMC Baldia West section after the enforcement of the Town Municipal system in 2002.The market value of the said KMC land is more than Rs1 billion which was allegedly sold at extremely low prices via fake challan with the nexus of a project director.

Dr Sadaat Memon – SESSI’s multi billionaire corrupt director



KARACHI: It seems that there is no check and balance on mega corruption in state-run-institution as a director level official owns properties worth billions of rupees and still they are enjoying the most lucrative posting.

Dr Sadaat Ahmed Memon, who has emerged as the most-corrupt official of the Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution (SESSI) these days with his alleged direct involvement in mega corruption at the institution, carries bogus career as he was illegally appointed directly in BPS-19.

In its report or the year 2016-17, the Auditor General of Pakistan in its report 2016-17 clearly mentioned: “It was observed that the management appointed Dr Sadaat Ahmed Memon directly in BPS-19 in January 2006 and subsequently promoted to BPS-20 in July 2013 without following eligibility criteria and prescribed experience in violation of rules”.

The auditor also pointed out that Rs 9.997 million paid to Dr Sadaat Ahmed Memon on account of pay and allowances were irregular.

According to Services Rules of Sindh Employees Social Security Institution (SESSI) 2006, the post in BPS-19 shall be filled by Selection Board by promotion on seniority-cum-fitness basis from among members of service holding the post of Senior Medical Officer/Women Senior Medical Officer subject to at least 12 year service in BPS-17 and above.

While remaining on the most lucrative posts in the organization, Dr Sadaat Memon has corrupted billions of rupees while playing with the lives of laborers. He remained posted as Director Procurement for couple of years from where he minted such a huge amount.

Here are the few achievements of Dr Sadaat Ahmed Memon:

  • He owns a private hospital – Sindh City Hospital now name changed as Al-Hamd Hospital – in city’s posh area worth Rs 1 billion.
  • He is the Master of fake-billing, over-payments.
  • Dr Sadaat owns 15-acre of precious commercial land just opposite to New Sabzi Mandi worth more than Rs 190 million.
  • Fake/bogus payments worth Rs 13.954 million at 25-bedded hospital at Labour Colony Daherki.
  • After buying a multi-millions private hospital in city’s posh area, an official of Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution (SESSI) has purchased commercial lands on superhighway worth millions of rupees, Sindhnews has learnt.

Dr Sadaat Ahmed Memon is one of them who has brought loss of billions of rupees to the Sindh Government and portrays himself as the ‘honest’ official.

Dr Sadaat Ahmed, the then Director Procurement, Sindh Employees’ Social Security Institution (SESSI), who is presently posted as Medical Superintendent SS Landhi Hospital, is under various investigation focusing corruption of billions of rupees in the institution.

As the Sindhnews highlighted that Dr Sadaat Ahmed Memon owned a hospital namely Sindh City in Karachi’s posh area with evidences, he immediately renamed the hospital as Al Hamd Hospital to avoid further investigations into the assets beyond known sources.

Sindhnews repeatedly tried to contact Dr Sadaat Ahmed for his official version however he never replied back to calls and text messages sent to him on WhatsApp.
